Ready Player One

I'm going to start by saying I'm a massive fan of director Steven Spielberg. From E.T to Jurassic Park and more, almost everything he touches turns to gold.

Ready Player One is unfortunately kind of the exception. Don't get me wrong it's a good film, and just about gets a four star rating, but it's not great. And, with Spielberg you don't just expect great, you demand it.

It's a great storyline because what the story is about is exactly how the world is going. The movie is about a virtual reality world called the Oasis.  It's set in 2045, in a world where the real world is that depressing that everyone lives in a virtual reality world. In this world you can be whoever you want to be, just like you can these days with VR headsets.

There are many things that make this a four star movie rather than a three star, such as a brief cameo from Simon Pegg, unfortunately using a dodgy American accent instead of his brilliant English one, plus many, many movie references.

There's a whole scene dedicated to the excellent movie The Shining, where he's somehow managed to protect the characters of this movie within that one and that is awesome. Back to the future is also referenced as is Chucky. All of that is epic. I won't tell you what happens in those scenes as that would be a spoiler, but watch the movie and see how many other movie references you can get.

Where the movie goes a bit off track is although this is the way the world is going, especially with VR, it feels a bit too far fetched. Will the future really be that rubbish we just want to use virtual reality and will it look like it does on this movie? Who knows but I'm not convinced 100%.

That said for fans of the fantasy genre especially it is a great watch and a great way to spend 2 hours plus of your time.

In conclusion, if you're a fan of the genre it's great but if you're not you might not be impressed. A good movie but sadly not a great movie. Four stars awarded.
